Given that there's no hazard present, gift wrapping the shelter with some stripy Do Not Cross tape would provide a clear visual warning to drivers and passengers without impeding pedestrians.

Perhaps barriers are considered to be the only way of alerting blind passengers?

Maybe it needs stripy tape plus the aural equivalent of a flashing lantern (suitably directional and not too loud) saying 'This stop has closed. Buses stop 30 yards further on'.

The ultimate solution would be the RNIB React System, but I doubt whether many blind people in London carry the relevant trigger fobs.
OK so not quite perfect. But not that far off. Having got this far I would rather Quality Control concentrated in making sure other sites are up to the standard (now) at Bow rather than striving for perfection at one site.
The barrier's overkill, a strip of tape would have done just fine. I'm not asking for perfection, I'd just like a pavement we can all use.
DG is right. Having seen the area for myself, it is already hostile territory for pedestrians because of the sections of pavement barriered-off by the Cycle Superhighway brigade.

Blocking more of the pavement to close two bus-stops is indeed overkill but, judging by the TfL man that I spoke to on Monday, their only aim is to stop further embarrassment to TfL by doing a bodge here and a bodge there in the hope that DG will stop blogging.

Keep going, DG. Eventually they will learn that it's not really difficult. They only have to get it right.
It's OK, the barriers were reorganised overnight, and two abreast passage is now possible. STAND DOWN.
Good work. I hope the person who did the re-organising of the barriers was wearing the fluorescent jacket of invisibility. ;)
" the fluorescent jacket of invisibility"

Reminds me of how a television set was stolen from my student halls of residence, under the noses of people actually watching it. The thieves just walked into the common room wearing their lab coats, unplugged the set, and carried it away.
Obviously the barriers were not placed in the best position but if I had been walking past I would have just pushed the barriers in about a foot myself, not hard, easily done and sorted on the spot.

Friday afternoon update: The bus shelter at Bus Stop E has been removed. Workmen are currently busy making good the hole left in the pavement.

For now, the shelter at old Bus Stop M remains.
