I was saying just this last night as I passed them in Earls Court:

Gourmet Burger Kitchen sells small, non-tasty burgers for an expensive amount of money. Went once, have no plans to ever go in one again.

'Byron' is just the weirdest name ever for a restaurant - it does not conjur up images of food at all to me, am I alone in thinking this? What marketing ponce thought that that would be a good name? But maybe their food is delicious .... anyone?

Having recently eaten at a branch of Byron, I thought the food was excellent. I also had an Oreo milkshake, which was fantastic. I'll admit it's a strange name, though.

"even though there's not much original timber left"

The surprisingly thing is that 95% of the original timber was offsite when the fire happened. It mainly destroyed the supports used to hold the ship in the dry dock, which is why there's now this gleaming new glass structure.

I'd normally be cynical about these things too but that BBC documentary the other month shows that the "new" Cutty Sark is going to be really special.

Yes, thanks for asking. I dunno, I came home feeling lightly off, like I'd been assaulted in some way. Quite odd!
And, oh dear. Was it really that bad it made you swear?

Always good to see a new pie and mash place open. I'll be down there to sample at the soonest opportunity.

That building used to be the cricketers pub, always a nice spot for a quiet pint when all the other pubs were full to bursting.

Don't know about 95% of the timber being saved-most accounts have it at fifty percent. Anyway, the masts were also at Chatham so a good amount of original timber remains. We haven't reached the point of Ship of Theseus discussions yet.

I can't wait till she's open. She's beautiful.

Only 2% of original material was destroyed by the fire. The glass panel that will protect the ship from further wear and also allow visitors to walk beneath it and admire the ship's form was planned pre fire.

As for the new restaurants on the pier front - most welcome! About time.

And if Gourmet Burger offered your family-run business a lot of money to move, are you saying you'd refuse? They've been clever. Got a good deal and moved just round the corner. Good luck to them!

I’m not sure you could just walk up to the hull, could you, or admire its curves from a distance – wasn’t it stuck in a hole? Whereas now you’ll be able to walk underneath it… which, I don’t know, seems like a pretty fantastic thing to be able to do. The world is full of boats stuck in holes, but this seems to be something a bit different, and therefore quite exciting. Yes, there’ll be a café down there, but… A CAFÉ UNDERNEATH A BOAT! I think I read somewhere that it was going to specialise in teas, but I can’t seem to find a link, so… I guess we’ll have to wait and see. I might be disappointed, it might turn out to be the tackiest thing since B&Q’s ill-conceived tack department, just like the park might be reduced to mud and bones by some dressage-triggered apocalypse, but… equally, it might all turn out to be quite wonderful.

Ohh Matt your to optimistic to be a Londoner, everything new must be shit. It stands to reason.

I've passed through every week but been in a rush so not had a look around so thanks for the update. Boat looks nice but the other developments seem determined to transform the place into some franchise restaurant hell you'd choose to avoid. Will developers never learn to stop killing their golden geese?

I've been dragged along to the Canary Wharf Byron for a team lunch a couple of times. Not somewhere I'd ever choose myself. Pretty grotesque large portions of reconstituted red meat in white bap are about the only option there is, and I say that as a carnivore with a decent appetite by most standards. Huge markups on big sugary drinks. Having said that they do have cream soda, which I'm partial to.

Had a drink in F&B's cocktail bar the other night and I suspect the roof terraces of those two buildings are going to be the most popular drinking spots in Greenwich.

The view from F&B was just breathtaking (the cocktails were pretty damned good too). F&B offers a panorama view stretching from Docklands to ORNC, while Nando's will provide a vista encompassing an up front and personal shot of the Sark, views upriver to the City as well as the Docklands.

In my experience, the very best place to stand for a great view is always on top of the eyesore.
