Chigwell is the burial place of George Shillibeer, inventor of the Omnibus.

So not entirely disconnected from public transport, then.

"And as I turn the colour-plates
Edwardian Essex opens wide,
Mirrored in ponds and seen through gates,
Sweet uneventful countryside.

Like streams the little by-roads run
Through oats and barley round a hill
To where blue willows catch the sun
By some white weather-boarded mill.

“A Summer Idyll Matching Tye”
“At Havering-atte-Bower, the Stocks”
And cobbled pathways lead the eye
To cottage doors and hollyhocks."

It made me chuckle to see what looks like a sign commemorating the white water canoe slalom events which are not taking place in the district of Epping Forest as part of the 2012 London Olympics, below the sign welcoming drivers to Chigwell.

The Lee Valley White Water Centre, where the white water events will take place, is actually in Waltham Cross, in the borough of Broxbourne, Hertfordshire (on the other side of the River Lea).

The Olympic plaque beneath the Chigwell sign actually reads "Host County for the London 2012 Olympic Games Mountain Bike competition". Something that the people of Essex are truly proud of, I'm sure.

And lo, the mystery of Romford on a Sunday night was solved.

So obscure that only 5 people have so commented so far. Am impressed that after 10 years you are still finding new places to write about and as someone from south of the river I know nothing of this area beyond the names on the tube map!

Last time I walked part of the London Loop (south of the river) I fell into conversation with another walker. I said what a lovely stretch this was, and he replied that he preferred some of the Loop north of the river. Distant fields seem greener.

The description of Havering-atte-Bower as "chocolate boxy" and "East London" grates a bit....
