Thank you for writing up this series.

Yes, beautifully written, without prurience and without sentimentality, but with humanity and real interest.

A great series. Thanks DG.

Interesting to see that not even one of the five sites survives in anything resembling its original form. I guess that's London for you.

Yes, this has been a worthwhile series of posts. The links giving a greater insight into social conditions make very interesting reading too.

Still working my way through the links. I can wholeheartedly recommend the link from “the worst street in London.” It’s a contemporary record of a lively protest meeting of Dorset St residents regarding a Daily Mail article about them. Here’s a sample: “Whenever THE SLIGHTEST LITTLE THING occurs in Dorset Street, the Rector of Spitalfields and THE TOYNBEE HALL PEOPLE pounce on it like A HUNGRY MAN ON A DINNER. This I can say without fear of contradiction, that, bad as the last Rector was – AND GOD KNOWS HE WAS BAD ENOUGH! – he was an angel compared to the present Rector.”
(The Rector was present at the meeting.) |
