I don't know if you are aware of the little trick that my Aunty Delia used to do? Obviously not, you never met her.

She used to put little elastic bands on the flowers, just before they were due to bloom. For some reason this meant they didn't get too fat, but when she took the bands off them they flowered in profusion. Plus they stayed on the stalk. This was in Manchester like, in a very clay soil, so I am not sure how it will work down South. Plus is it cruelty to plants?

When I was Very Young I had a Guinea Pig. It used to climb up the stems of flowering gladioli and chew them off!
