I always find it strange that the District Council takes its name from one of the smallest villages in its domain. Why?
P.o.P., I believe the district takes its name from the Hundred of Tandridge, which covered a similar sort of area, rather than the village; similar to how the London Borough of Havering takes its name from the Royal Liberty of Havering, rather than the smallish village of Havering-atte-Bower.
Along those lines, I wonder if they considered a LB of Wallington instead of Sutton? Brixton instead of Lambeth, perhaps?
I grew up in Lingfield - the library was in a similar house near the church whose interior I spent hours studying (bored with psalms and sermons) during Sunday services. But I never knew that near the school I went to briefly at the age of four ran the meridian line. Did you see the brasses in the church? And the carved heads under the wooden choir stool seats?
Gorgeous villages. You did well there.
"with the highest proportion of economically inactive women in Britain"...really? Maybe a Channel4 docu will follow soon...
“Economically inactive” – the Office of National Statistics’ odd term for “not in paid employment”. These women would be economically active in that they’d be spending money. And they’d be buying quality stuff, not Chinese tat. Not a bad thing, surely.
(BTW, the link from Housewife Central didn’t work for me but I found the article at
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/lifestyle/9477496/Not-so-desperate-housewives-We-are-all-cocooned-from-reality-here.html)
mmm...but I wonder if these sort of terms would be used for men? Far more interesting to find "Househusband Central" ...and see how they getting on being "economically active" spending money buying quality stuff.
That though probably a Channel5 "reality-series" to look forward too...
Woooo Oxted...
Glad you enjoyed our bit of Surrey. There's always somewhere nice to visit locally. Thats why I love Surrey so much. Sometimes it's just like going back 50 years. Open gardens for charity are good for us too.
