I feel that British readers have a rather primitive taste. IMHO the top three in this list are very "cheap" media, expertise in gossips. I respect the Guardian the most, even though I find myself disagreeing with them 70% of the time.
How is the Independent not red? Probably the most partisan mainstream paper to be found!
Fascinating figures. Interesting to see the comparison between The Guardian's newspaper sales and the combined paper/online figures.

I would imagine it's largely due to the high cost of the newspaper and also the fact that reading online is free, even though a donation is requested, unlike The Times for example where you have to subscribe to read fully.
The Daily Mail is very popular in the USA, apparently, and The Guardian has editorial teams and versions of the website based in the USA, Australia and New Zealand. Do the online figures include visits from those countries, or just from UK domains?

I would put another spin on the point Patrickov makes: by comparing UK print media circulation with that in other countries with a broadly similar population and level of human development:

Newspaper circulation in the UK has long been relatively higher than elsewhere; but the other noteworthy point is that the largest circulation in papers in, say, France or Italy, have tended to focus solely on sports, being devoid of political or general news content. So in effect UK tabloid readers are better informed in the main than their counterparts in those countries.

I also think the combative, non-deferential, nature of the London press, again in substantial contrast to its counterparts in numerous other Western countries, probably including the US as well as, certainly, France and Germany, does a good job of holding politicians to account and keeping them relatively non-corrupt by almost any measure of international comparison.
