Well dg done for going out in the rain on Sunday. I did not go to any Open House venues this year. I was unsuccessful in ballot many other places I have visited before.
When I read about council apartment blocks, especially higher built ones, it always reminds me of how I almost bought an apartment in North Kensington, (it had nice view of Trelick Tower). The deal fell through, as my solicitor was not very keen on the sale.
Looking back over the 12 years since then, that building has had major work done on it twice, and the lifts are in need of refurbishment/replacement. Those who rent do not have to worry about the cost of this, and if they are on Housing benefit do not even have to find the money for the rent. The few who have bought an ex-council high rise flat however get a huge "repairs" bill, that with regular high service charges and the fact that the building is mainly occupied by people the council has placed there, some of whom get their rent paid for, and who often have no interest in the building, disheartens would be purchasers.
That being said it seems that Trellick Tower has kept up value on apartments for sale, although I suspect that they are lower than an apartment in the same area in a private block.
I love this sort of thing! If only Britain had more high-quality towers rather than the mediocre (I think mediocre is generous) crap that was mostly built.
Wow, I wouldn't have imagined there were two-storey maisonettes inside. And the corridor on every third floor is quite clever.

But half a million pounds? The famous Newquay island house was on sale for £995k, and the owners bought it for £500k.
Good news - that flat sale website dates from 2008 and looks a tad optimistic - Foxtons have a three bed available for 400k now.
Brilliant - glad someone got to go! I put in for over a dozen ballots including Trellick and didn't get a single hit, very galling to discover most booked sites were under capacity :( I live in another Goldfinger building in Elephant - Metro Central Heights (née Alexander Fleming House)

and it's fascinating to see the shared features such as the stained glass. I've often wished MCH would open up for an open house or similar, but the private ownership and venal management co probably make it awkward.
I don't quite understand the corridor on every third floor, how do residents get to the flats between these floors? Do thy have to walk up/down a further set of stairs?
The Open City scheme is really admirable, but....yes, their booking system is an utter shambles. Having once been in Trellick, I applied this year for Balfron, but failed (that isn't, by the way, the reason for my grievances concerning the booking system).
I satisfied myself instead by visiting an impressive Georgian church with its original box pews all still intact. Someone else has taken a nice picture of right here:

Thanks dg, a good taste of the tour for the rest of us who couldn't be there.
Anonymous commenter #58049 @12:23: DG's report says the corridor on one floor (x) provides access to the flats on the floor immediately above (x+1) and below (x-1).
people think they ought to like these things but its badly imaged and idea is shallow
