An interesting and intelligent account to start the day about an area I know little. The throw-away remark about English rugby / All blacks I nearly missed- I do believe we are still the World Champions.

I have to comment once here because this is where I grew up - and it wasn't a very exciting place to grow up but I am glad that you have found the best bits to highlight (except Orpington that is). I learned to swim in Crystal Pallace baths and saw Bowie play in the open air in the Library Gardens long before he was famous (or called Bowie for that matter).

Always thought it was odd that Crystal Palace was in Bromley. I mean, it's not really all that far out of town is it? I know it's in the very NW-most corner of the borough and all, but it just *seems* wrong.

Chz,

A schoolmate told me many years ago that there is a thin strip of land that includes Crystal Palace and belongs to Bromley because many years or centuries ago there was a dead body found there. The local council refused to remove it but the smell wafted over the neighbouring council area (presumably Beckenham and Penge Urban District Council or a predecessor) and an agreement was made to transfer this relatively narrow strip from one council to the other so that the body could be disposed of by the affected council.

I have no idea whether or not this is true and have not read or heard about it elsewhere but as you say it does seem strange that Crystal Palace is in Bromley and that is the only explanation I have ever heard to account for it.

Great dinosaurs!

In this day and age of computer graphics, where the world has grown bored with digital animations of scientifically realistic dinosaurs, I think those original sculptures have a wonderful artistic quality to them.

They ought to be in a museum so they'll last out the ages... or at least another 100 years.

Marvelous summary and pictures!! Are there taxis at the train stations? I'd rather spend my time at Down House than waiting for the bus....
