Don't rely on Thames Barrier Park's website to get you there. It gives complicated "how to get there" instructions but doesn't mention that Pontoon Dock DLR station is right next to it.

Pontoon Dock DLR station has only been open for six months - you wouldn't expect a local government website to have reacted yet, would you?

Have you got an easy page with the rest of these on?

(in the meantime, they're all listed here)

I was there the day after the Buncefield fire and I caught the light on this picture. (link is to big pic, small one in post is here.)

Bexley wouldn't get soaked - it's miles from the river, unless a surge tide went down the Cray - but Erith, Belvedere and Slade Green most definitely would.

And bloody hell, is it the same video? The last time I went, it featured snippets from the Capital Radio breakfast show circa 1983. I'm sure the VERY spooky "doll floating down the Thames" public information film (which scared the shit out of anyone born in London in the 70s) also featured.

My advice would be to combine a trip to the Barrier with a boat trip to Greenwich (or a leisurely stroll if you've got the energy).

Real countries like Australia just live with floods, we don't put up barriers like ladyboys. Then once everything is flooded we get our boats out and sail down the main street.

Drinking beer.

Wearing a big hat.

Soon after the Barrier opened I was lucky enough to go on a 'private' tour with a group of construction industry film makers. We were able to walk halfway across the Thames using the underwater tunnels that join the platforms together.

Also had a boat trip around the Barrier and along the Thames enjoying our buffet lunch. They knew how to do PR in those days...

I hope that video they're still showing had nothing to do with you...

Of course I wouldn't have expected local government to have reacted yet. Months ago I sent an email to Tower Hamlets politely pointing out that their travel page on getting to London City Airport was out of date and almost completely wrong. Its still there at

No I had nothing to do with the video but if it was taken from a film made by the Costain Film Unit then I knew someone that did.
