Glad to have you back! How did the hot water story conclude then?

That tipping one...that's part of the reason that beer's so cheap. Or appears to be. As with restaurants etc.

Proper beer is one thing I always miss...

You forgot to add Tax to the list. Why the heck they can't add the tax to the price on the shelves or menu I'll never know. You get the right money our for a coffee and it's a totally different price to what you were expecting!

Maybe they are all experts at percentile mental arithmetic. Unlike me.

About your English English...What you didn't notice, apparently, was that everywhere you went and spoke, the women around you were drooling. We love listening to your London English, even if we can't understand a word of it. (Didn't you notice them staring?)

toilet bowls: Sorry to be blunt, but I really don't want to see where I've been after I've gone.

Think yourself lucky - in some German houses I've visited they have a contraption that actually weighs what you've deposited on the shelf too... (I'll bet they also exist in California).

Regarding the tipping I always found that in London most of the gratuities in restaurants were included.

dollars smell bad man.
worse than british notes, that's for sure.

Actually we use 'packed' to mean 'full' all the time. That's strange if somebody didn't understand you, though I've never heard the word 'ta' before. I like that.

Yes, television offerings in North America range from banal to numbing. I do miss British telly. In Canada we sometimes get vintage glimpses of As Time Goes By, Antiques Roadshow, Frost, Dalziel and Pascoe, Time Team and a few others. Oh, and this season, Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares which I love because he never stops swearing...common, but somehow refreshing.
I have no idea what you're talking about when it comes to toilet bowls though.
San Francisco is truly a wonderful city to visit. Lucky you - the big one didn't hit while you were there...the spice of life: living on a fault line.

Signed, approved, and agreed.

One thing I do miss after returned home to London, though, is the ability to go into just any restaurant or other venue without disappearing into a cloud of smoke. A true Californian delight.

Well, that's coming to England soon, too. Thanks heavens!

Don't forget there's one wibbly road in SF and its something of a tourist attraction!
