At home I actually still use a computer I bought whisper it at the start of 2001. It crashes whenever I dare to have more than two windows open.

When I first got my router, it took me 3 days to configure it. I had to get my "techy" mate to come round and sort it out. It always used to crash so I abandoned it - until I got my new laptop with built in network card. No stopping me now! Good luck!

PS - Glad normal service is resumed!

You know switching out a hard drive is really easy. If you still have your old computer you should do that and upgrade your memory while you're at it. You'll save a bunch of money and your computer will run a lot better too! Good luck and visit my blog if you have the time.

"You know switching out a hard drive is really easy."

Er, no I don't.
Maybe I will one day.

- no more kittens!".. what not ever?

but but but... i really liked your kittens post! *irony*
cool you're back... the non-techy way you told your story about computer was really funny - i work on IT environment and sometimes is interesting to listen what a non IT addicted has to say about computers

Welcome to the 21st century.

And yes, wireless routers are impossible to set up for those of us non-geeks. I've found that they also have a tendency to unset their security settings for no apparent reason, so do check regularly.

With a laptop it's even more vital that you back up your data every week because they are very 'moody' (technical term).

Did I mention external hard drive before? Oh, I did? OK

and a wireless router is ?
If this is becoming a self help site. I’d like to know where I can find ITMA on my wireless?

Consistent with my belief that non-geeks just give up and buy a new one. Given the value of time nowadays, the relative cheapness of computers and the fact that they genuinely do have better features I suspect it is the only rational decision in the circumstances.

Consider the alternative of a USB flash disk in lieu of external hard drive. It won't die on you and virtually the only person that can let you down is yourself. If it is too easy to lose attach it to a nice fluffy stuffed kitten.

Wireless routers are the spawn of the devil. No idea why it's so complex, as I'm sure the Apple-holics will soon tell you.

Glad you've got a new shiny laptop though but you forgot to tell us one crucial thing.

What colour is it!

Yes, external hard disk or flash disk is important if your files are important to you. (mine aren't) Laptops have a slightly higher failure rate than standard PCs - particularly if you carry them around the house instead of leaving them in one place all the time like most people seem to do. (No, I don't get the point of that)

After I foolishly left my wireless router un-passworded to find the next door neighbour using it, I renamed my network to "Get your own WiFi you twat" and it stopped.

Yes well laptops are good investment.. u can wake up stay in bed and talk to your friends online !

DG, we need to know - is it a NetGear or a Linksys? Netgeat make the rather excellent "DG384" model, which shares your initials!

Hurrah! Well done and welcome back DG. Saw this comment on the London Olympics and thought of you: http://www.heady.co.uk/b3ta/

Hope you like it.

You wore the old one out, see. It wasn't designed for the most prolific blogger in bloggendom, it was designed for the "Popped into Burger King on the way home. Sick as a pig. Will blog again tomorrow" crowd.

My god, talk techie and you get the most comments ever. I'll have to remember that for my travel blog !

Blogging? Outdoors? Are you ill?

Nothing better than a nice warm laptop. Mine is the only thing staving off frostbite now that we just got our scary gas bill and can't turn up the heating

I got my pc in 1999, its still going strong, although I have put in more memory and another hard drive and a new cd burner ... dont worry, adding things is dead easy and there are step by step guides you can follow on the web for installing stuff.
