Just as well you're doing these in ascending order - by the time you get to Saturday it'll be well past your bedtime

It may be the best start but look where it goes from there: Brentford, Heathrow, Slough and Maidenhead. They don't really live up to those first few miles.

I do have a copy of 'London - the biography' and I do mean to read it at some point. My problem is that it's too big to carry to and from work and I don't read much at home any more.

I used to work between Aldwych & Trafalgar Square and our office stationery gave the address as "Strand" rather than "The Strand". When I asked I was told that was the correct name for the road. Does anyone know if this is true?

I used to work on New Fetter Lane. It's a particularly drab, non-descript road.

It's very hard trying to describe non-descript roads, so writing about New Fetter Lane was quite challenging.

Brilliant write up DG. It's amazing how much richness in detail and history there is on this particular mile. You didn't mention the fact that the Charing Cross is traditionally viewed as the "centre" of London though! (At least from London cab perspective.) I'm sure you've written about this before somewhere too ...

Jag - my mile ran out just before I reached the 'centre of London', which is supposedly on the corner where the Strand meets Trafalgar Square.
