GLad your mum is OK and soon to depart the wards.... one of the scariest things I found during a ten day sojourn a few years ago was how quickly I became institutionised. I got used the to routine times for everything. Even the screams in the night became just another part of the normality.

Glad to hear your mom's alright.

My NHS experience is that you're well looked-after if it's simple and small, or huge and life-threatening. It's the in-between that's generally not so great. Anything not life threatening that needs more than a night in the A&E ward goes to the bottom of the list. There simply isn't money to have specialists in all weekend when it's not strictly needed. It's pretty much the same back in Canada, but without the option of going private.

Patientline - good grief, I bet it's even advertised "for your convenience"

Naturally, mobile phones don't actually disrupt hospital electronic equipment - or they wouldn't have a whole array of mobile phone repeaters on the roof of the Royal Berkshire hospital - so they've actually got themselves one hell of a cash cow there.

When my father was having his replaced a few years ago I found the weirdest thing was the realisation that I was looking after him and not the other way around. A strange change in perspective and not one that I'll forget.

Glad to hear she's OK and, I hope, not too out of pocket from Patientline!

They even have Patientline in labour wards. Not sure whether that's because of optimism, stupidity or callousness.

Welcome to the New Improved NHS ... surely your Mum could have had a panoramic view of Norfolk from the first floor? Glad she is on the mend, get her out of there before they do anything to her ... theres no place like home.

Actually working for a "mobile" company proves Mr Duck is correct. It has been known for some time that signals do NOT interfere with medical equipment, computers, aircraft navigation systems or petrol pumps. Still it wouldn't be in the interests of the hospital to kill that cash cow would it! I went in 10 years agho for 6 weeks. Weight in 10stone, weight out 12.5 stone. Hospital food crap? Don't make me laugh, it was spot on! GJ

It'll be a big relief for your mum to get out I'm sure. Horrible places. Mostly devoid of real care.

I'm a nurse, so I thought I'd give my 2p worth. It IS really frustrating for patients (AND for Drs and nurses) that many tests etc cannot be done over a weekend. There is one test in particular I am thinking of which only a few people in the hospital can do, the results can take over 24hrs to come back, and never over a weekend!

And, incidentally, mobile phones DO interfere with some drug infusion pumps, but I think the latest evidence is that they do not interfere with cardiac monitors.

:o)
