That special delivery is probably your new Tesco Clubcard.

People in prison have miserable days and long sentences too.

My postman tells me he just fakes the signature if I'm not in.

Be assertive with Tescos next time there are no trolleys. Go up to the customer service desk and say, "Would you arrange for someone to get me a trolley, please; there are none in the trolley bays and a basket won't be large enough for all I want to buy." It's what you pay them for, after all...

And I thought that if you sent the card back for a special delivery item, they would deliver it wherever else you wanted? (eg to your work address). Maybe that doesn't apply in London? It does round here, because I did it a couple of weeks ago. Watch the days on the special delivery item too - there's a time limit to the length of time they will hold them (and I'd suspect it's a new bank card if you're not expecting anything).

The customer service desk is at the back of the store near the car park, which sort of wrecks the point of wanting a trolley at the front of the store. And there's always a long queue of locals waiting to buy fags and lottery tickets at the customer service desk so it would mean an even longer wait. I have complained about the lack of trolleys before, but trolleylessness just seems to have got worse.

As for redelivering my letter somewhere else, they really will only forward it to "another address delivered by this office". The card also says they'll keep my letter "for three weeks" which, if it is indeed the bank card for the bank account I never ever use a bank card for, should be no great inconvenience.

Meanwhile I had two cards left for me by the Postman yesterday morning. I know exactly what the items are and wanted them both for the weekend. I was in but rather than knock the postman just posted the cards (very quietly) through the door. I found the cards on the mat in our porch at precisely noon........... too late to pick up from the sorting office (even if they'd been there).

um...

SNAP!

dg, you've made made me feel so much better writing this - a similar wild goose chase (also involving e-mails) happened with me recently. It was my Wanadoo broadband modem which I was expecting too, which made it particularly frustrating.

NiC, that's happened to me as well! Another thing they've done is called and knocked timidly on a Monday, when I was in, then only delivered a card on the Tuesday, saying 'we called on Monday', so I didn't know anything about it until Tuesday evening, and couldn't get the package until I had to collect it on the Saturday (before noon).

Perhaps we can form a 'victims of Royal Mail ineptitude' support group? (VORMI - it has a nice ring to it.) It's no wonder people are calling for them to be privatised, although I fear that would just make things even more fragmented and ten times more difficult for people outside of the cities.

Is that the Tesco next to where The Block used to be? I've realised (from this and your Bow Rd station updates) that you must live very near to where some good friends of mine lived for about 5 years, until 1 year ago; opposite the Nat West, the pub, church and auto spares place. We used to walk from theirs to The Block. Oops! Sorry, I mean 'to Tesco'.

Chig - the very same Tesco, and the very same sort-of-near-Bow-Church area. You might be interested in reading my blog from August last year, especially August 25th. The Block has since been painted pink and reopened as Club Rosé which, by the looks of things, targets an almost exactly opposite clientele.

I once caught the postman in the act of leaving me the little card when he hadn't even bothered at all to ring the doorbell to see if I was in. He said that since he had already written it up, he wasn't allowed to give me my parcel ... even though I was standing right in front of him. Roar!

Part 4: Mike Riley

Mr G,

Get a car and then you have to park around the back of Teskys. You can find the trolleys next to the three disabled bays occupied by able bodied chavs who are too lazy to walk the extra 10 metres.

Once you have the car a couple of weeks you will discover the ASDA in the docklands...there is a better class of scum there.

UH.

Or Internet shopping.

Uncle H - I can't own a car where I live because if I parked one outside it would either be clamped, towed or stolen.
And the big problem with internet shopping is that it involves home delivery (see part 1...)

Our postman never rings the bell either - he just posts the card through the letter box. Our "local" sorting office is miles away on the edge of town, shuts at noon EVERY day, and never, repeat NEVER, answers the phone if you want to arrange a re-delivery. We once had to resort to ringing head office and getting them to send an e-mail (for which we got a letter of apology, accompanied by a compensatory BOOK OF STAMPS - woo-hoo!)

Thanks for the pointer, dg. I read your bit on the block last night and will peruse the rest of your Bow articles at a later date. I'll also tell my friends who used to live there. They now live in Spain and I bet you know them - at least by sight!

1. 3pm? That's terrible. The Saturday 12 o'clock closing has been in force for at least 5 years at that office, though. Do they still open at 8am? Could be possible, if you can go into work late.
2. The car park behind the Block is closer than the car park behind Tesco's - although generally devoid of trolleys, also.
I'm not entirely sure what the problem is with getting your trolleys from the store front entrance, instead of the back by the bus stop, though - don't you have to walk down that end to get your veggies anyway?
3. You're spot on about the car though.

Vanessa - 1a) The Saturday closing time used to be 2pm earlier this year. I remember arriving very smugly at 1:58pm just as they were hoping to lock up.
Vanessa - 1b) Some of us can't go into work late. Only the Royal Mail, it seems.
Vanessa - 2) No trolleys in the car park beside the Block either.

Have you rung Tesco national customer service line about the trolley problem? Tell them you've tried to sort it with the store but to no avail.

I'm reliably informed that Tescos have procedures for dealing with such things. Apparently such complaints go down on a form that could affect the manager's bonus if not dealt with...
