The temperature at Bank station during the summer is just less than that of the Sun's core.

I hereby issue a challenge:

The first person who doesn't already know you who successfully approaches and identifies you, having located you on this journey, can have a jar of special BW honey. And a spell candle.

Encouraging stalking, moi?

Sands, the temperature of Bank station in the middle of winter hovers just above that of the surface of Mercury. Once it's that hot, it's hard to tell the difference.

Okay, it's not all that hot. It's just incredibly stuffy.

Is it really that crowded on the westbound Central Line coming in from east London in the morning?

Oh.

I think you've just convinced me that I don't want to move east, then, and have to contend with the Central Line through to White City every morning.

Thank you. I consider that a public service.

I used to do it from Mile End or Stratford, and it wasn't too awful. You can bag seats beyond Bank, or Oxford Circus at the latest. The Bethnal Green-Liverpool Street stretch is hairy, though.

I tend to get on at Bank, but if there's a 521 at Cannon Street, I'll hop on it to St Paul's, where seats are easier to bag, it's cooler, and you can have the platform to yourself!

Vaughan - move east of east and you'll be fine - there are always seats on the westbound central line from Epping in the morning rush hour... in fact, it doesn't fill up completely until about Stratford.

The 'very crowded' bit of the Central Line journey is Bethnal Green to Liverpool Street. The rest of the section from Stratford to St Paul's is merely 'crowded'.

It's official. It's all on page 10 (pdf page 14) of the London Travel Report 2002. Fascinating document, if a bit on the big side (more reports here).

Expect a proper blog about this soon...

I can't do tube commuting any more - the claustro gets too much. With Ken's insistence on destroying the advantage in comfort that the bus services used to have, I'm ever closer to buying a car.

BW - move to *EPPING*??!! But that's . . . almost . . . well, almost not London! How would I cope?

Ever see the short film "The Waterloo Bridge Handicap" with Leonard Rossiter? Sounds like you're doing the re-make.
